Lighting standards for the last five decades have centered on the idea of even illumination. By setting goals like this, it seems ultimately we're trying to remove shadows from built environment, especially in our office spaces. This creation of totally shadowless flat light supposedly creates more productive workspaces. The only problem is that there is nothing about perfectly even illumination that stimulates our eyes or brains.
