Four Lighting Fixtures That Need to Disappear

There are dozens of light fixtures that need to disappear from our everyday life. I just picked out four to share here.

  • Linear Fluorescent Up/Down Lights - Please, retailers stop drenching your aisles with cold, much contrast-free light that doesn't actually get to the shelves I'm trying to browse.
  • The Boob Light - I've railed against this light before. It's the cheap general purpose, put light everywhere dome that lives in every house. Please replace this at all costs.
  • The Huge Aperture CFL Downlight - These were very popular in the 80's and 90's as an energy efficient way of delivering general lighting. They suck. They suck more when they are supposed to be part of an otherwise decorative ceiling arrangement. They are also a very good example for lighting manufacturers of why it's not a good idea to jam new light sources in old form factors.
  • Cheap (Poorly Installed) LEDS - Poor quality LED is flooding the market, especially colored and color changing LED. Because these lights are so cheap the temptation is there to buy and install them wherever you wanted a dash of color. PLEASE don't do it. This is no different than buying cheap rope light. Take the time and have your detail professionally designed and installed. Or else your bar might look like the one in the slide show.
